Terrific Telemarketer

If you’re like me, then you receive numerous phone calls sponsoring, promoting or collecting. Yes, I am speaking of the dreaded telemarketers. Usually, and not to be stereotypical, they are foreign people who can’t pronounce your last name and you can scarcely understand. These calls are both annoying and at times, aggravating. I don’t know how many people I’ve heard speaking rudely to telemarketers. That really made me think. Why do we take it out on them? It’s not as if they want to bother us.  It’s their job. Just imagine how frustrating it is to them! Placing hundreds of calls only to be yelled at. I decided I would always be polite to these people; try to enumerate patience, kindness, and helpfulness. I’d even ask how their day was going.

Once, I answered a telemarketing call. I no longer remember what this person was selling, but I’ll never forget them. The voice on the other end of the phone sounded tired and jaded. She when through the usual speech she’d probably given a thousand times. I detected a slight accent; from where, I can’t be sure. “May I ask how your day has been going?” I questioned, hoping she wouldn’t mind too much I had ignored her sales pitch.  “Um…okay, I suppose.” she answered reluctantly. I gave a brief summary of my afternoon, adding cheer and zeal into my voice.

“Listen-you sound a little down in the dumps.” I began, all the while wondering if I was going too far.  “I just want you to know, that whatever you’re going through, I’m sure times will get better.”

There was a long silence as I waited for her to respond. “Thank you.” she chocked out. “Things haven’t been going too greatly, and everyone I spoke with today has been rude. I really appreciate your kindness.” We exchanged good-byes and I hung up. I was proud that I had made someone’s day a little better, and grateful I had been given the opportunity.

Kindness returned

It’s sad how companies use people to sell their wares with little to no concern as to their employees emotional wellbeing. I hate answering the phone to telemarketers, not because I don’t want to buy whatever it is they are selling or even listen to them, but because I CAN’T buy anything they are selling (not rich enough, just yet). Telemarketing has to be in the top ten worst jobs to get because you always have to deal with people who will usually say, no. We live in an age now where if you want something, you only have to do a Google search on-line for it. You’d think it would be more beneficial for a company who wanted to sell there items to have a website, and then either have incoming telemarketers answering, or have them on computer’s, to catch transactions, if necessary. But I digress; the people who make cold calls who are of foreign descent, really must feel miserable at the end of a long day getting rude, and unkind responses from the people they have to call. It’s no wonder that people in foreign countries look down on American tourists because of their, “uppity,” behavior. You would think it would be more beneficial to treat telemarketers the way you would want to be treated if you were forced to be in their shoe’s. Makes one wonder how a good number of those cold callers can call themselves, good people, or “Christian’s.”

You definitely helped that lady realize that not everyone is rude, mean, or cold hearted, and for that you should be commended. Thanks for sharing. youyour story.your story.
