Helping Someone Find a Job

I work for a company who has a reputation for laying off people once they reach their mid-50’s.  An acquaintance was laid off - I heard about it.  I respected the work I had see him do while working at my company.  I contacted other friends in the industry and gave him a recommendation.  Within a month he was employed again doing what he loves.

Older Workers--So Great and Wonderful to have arou

I think that older people make great workers because they bring knowledge and wisdom to a job. This is not to say that fresh faces and new ideas aren’t important either. I think that ageism is horrid, and I really think that companies should really look more at the human element and give more jobs out to the elderly, especially since Social Security is dwindling.

Older workers make things work with their great common sense. They bring pride to a craft or to a job. We have a man where I work who is almost 60; he puts together news stories for our organization. He’s great! We have another lady who is in her late 50’s and she does a great job with being a webmaster. At my church, our Sunday School director is 80!

The only thing that I might worry about is health risk in some isolated cases. Flex time or extra amenities might help some people who age faster than others. However, for companies, I think that the hiring policies should reflect fair hiring of individuals as long as they are essentially fit for the job, and I don’t mean for them to use that as an excuse for ageism.

Good luck to folks 55 and over!
