I worked at a local service station for 5 1/2 years. A customer (whose two sons also worked for the company part time) came in to pick up his vehicle after an oil change. He got into his car, drove away, and then broke down, still in sight of the service station. He came back in and said he heard a strange noise and then the engine stopped running. So I called a tow truck for him & also called our service manager to inquire if he had heard any strange noises while he had moved the vehicle. He said no, and to have it put in the garage for tomorrow. The customer went home. Not 10 minutes later, the service manager came flying into the parking lot (I worked the night shift) and rushed into the garage. I watched him as he pulled all the spark plugs out, spraying them with lubricant, and tried to break the cam with a large wrench. THEN I realized what had happened: he had done an oil change, and NEVER PUT MORE OIL IN!! The engine had seized, and he was trying to cover it up! I went home with a sick feeling in my stomach. Then I called the customer’s son because I knew his phone number and asked to speak with his father. I told his father what I had witnessed and that the service manager was trying to cover up a serious (and expensive) mistake! I was fired the next day. BUT I spoke with that customer about a year later, and found out that the company had to replace his vehicle for him because (obviously) the engine in his was not fixable. I lost my job and benefits. I had a 1 year old son I was trying to support at the time, but I still felt like it was worth it. No one should have to suffer from that kind of dishonesty.

I am so proud of you. I did something similar to this at a job I had had for sixteen years and was basically fired too. They told me I could move to another school. but that wasn’t for me because the crooked person was still working for the school system so I decided to leave. But I feel free of guilt now because I know I did the right thing.

Fired For Telling The Truth
God is the One who gave a FREE will to all to us. He honors your honesty. Knowing that the outcome would not be in your favor you did the RIGHT THING anyway. You will never know the amount of people you have and are touching that’s reading your story and are praying & hoping the BEST for you.
Pray for your former service manager, he has to live with that decision he made for the rest of his life. And remember NO ONE can repay you like GOD.

Amen!
I second Lisa’s comments. It isn’t always easy to do the right thing, especially when you know it will have a negative impact on your life. Jesus knows what it is like to be punished though you haven’t done anything wrong and He is there to comfort you.

You did the right thing
You did the right thing, I would have done the same thing, a company, its management or employees should just fess up the mistake and get it over with, too bad it was you, but at least it turned out all right.

We need more courage like yours
Too bad that service manager didn’t have any. I hoped they learned a lesson about responsibility. Sorry it was partly at your expense.

Living with Yourself
Bravo! You are one of those rare and lucky people who know the value of living your life according to your own rules and values. That did indeed take courage and if we all had that kind of courage imagine the kind of world we would live you. You should be very proud and I hope your loved ones our proud of you, too. You obviously will be a great father, too.

I’m sure it was a struggle to lose your job, but when working for someone who has such different values than you, getting fired was inevitable, aAnd a blessing.

witness to no oil change
Did you file suit against your former employer for blowing the whistle. If you hadn’t could you have been named in a law suite by the customer for abetting the cover up. Should you find a lawyer and file suite against your former boss . Attorneys often do several pro bono cases a year, especially if there is a good possibly that the case can be won.

So not cool...
I would call the EEOC, I am sure you don’t want your job back but make them sweat! Maybe make a complaint to the BBB and/or make a complaint with HQ. You know down here in Texas we call the news stations and they will rip that place to shreds!
