Discussion Guide for The Home Run

The following are questions that can be used in guiding a discussion about the film The Home Run:

1. If you didn’t know this was a true story, would you have thought it could happen? Why or why not?
2. The opposing team could have easily insisted that the about the runner touching each base be strictly enforced, yet they didn’t. Why do you think they acted the way they did?
3. Did the losing team compromise its competitive edge by its act of kindness?
4. If it had been an important championship tie-breaking game, do you think the losing team should/would have taken the same actions?
5. Is it easier to perform such an extraordinary act of sportsmanship when there’s less at stake?
6. Should the umpire have insisted the rules be followed instead of allowing his authority to be over-ruled by the losing team?
7. Is the concept ‘Do unto others’ applicable in sports in a broader sense? Why or why not?
8. How do you know when it’s time to break the rules?
9. Does the fact that the players were women make a difference in this instance? Do you think two men’s teams would have responded the same way?
10. If you were the captain or pitcher of the losing team, what would you have done?
