Good Deeds...
Stories like this should be reported more often. This renews faith in mankind. There are people out there who care enough to give selflessly and aren't looking for recognition. Their deeds will certainly be rewarded and I urge all who read this to take their own actions to seek good deeds for those in need.

Many options...
I have a 3rd grader and he and his friends are SO impressionable. I am sure the main planning in this incident was the doing of one or two crafty students and the others were simply followers. I think the letters of apology and community service are good ideas, but because of how impressionable these kids are, a scared straight approach might be the way to go too. Have the children "arrested" and talked to by the police. Take them to a facility where kids are detained and let them see how they live. It might put enough fear in them to keep them from future troubles.

The Right Thing
He absolutely did the right thing. At some point he may have felt backed into a corner, but turning his father in was the ethical thing to do. I am sure at some point, he was mature enough to understand the consequences of what his father was doing to him and he knew it was wrong, but if he feared his father the way I expect he did, it was brave of him to do what he did.
