My Opinion vs. Yours

I think I see a lot of people getting the wrong side of the story here. The man, in my eyes, was really courageous and smart for what he’s done. He has observed what has just happened, and took a moment to think it over, all the options. He first thought about solving it with a call to the robber’s stolen phone to freak him out. Then decided not to get involved by calling the authorities. Finally, seeing that the bus has stopped he finally confronts the man realizing that he’s just afraid and trying to find his way through society and ultimately the world. The flashback he had of the woman getting her bag stolen has impacted him, because he has helped her with something earlier before. It was little, but he has made a slight connection to her. Probably his wife, a friend, or just some new person he didn’t know about before.

Makes me angry

This thief makes me angry. Why? Because he thinks he’s better than everyone else. Other people have to work to make money – he expects to just TAKE it from them. He thinks he doesn’t have to work; it’s beneath him – that’s for lower people than himself. He is better – he can just take. What a loser.

What should the witness have done? Notify the bus driver then call 911. Tell the thief he should be ashamed and to get a job like everyone else. Then testify to police to send the little narcissist to jail where he can have a very large roommate.

Knowledge = power

I agree with the previous commenter who said that he should have alerted the bus driver, who would have silently alerted police.

We can only do the right thing if we have the power to do so. This is also a good example of how we can give ourselves power through knowledge. I’m shocked (and more that a little dismayed) that no one has mentioned the solution that’s so obvious to me, I thought of it before the movie even ended. All modern cell phones have a GPS locator in them. If you call 911, the operator can get your location via GPS even if you don’t say a word. I understand the man was afraid to talk to 911 since the theif could overhear him, but if he called 911 and didn’t say a word, police would still show up.

I suspect most people don’t know that about cell phones. Hopefully someone reads this and becomes more empowered.

No Action Is Acceptance

Direct confrontation is obviously a risky choice. What appears to be the man preparing for a soft confrontation is equally as risky. There were plenty of non-confrontational choices that would at least stand a chance. Had the man gone to the back of the bus immediately and called 911 inconspicuously, he could have easily reported it without the robber hearing. At the intersection with the police car, he could have pulled the cord and tried to convince the driver that she was missing his stop. Even if the driver would only stop to the next intersection he would stand a chance of still flagging down the officer, or making a call with a squad car in the immediate vicinity. At the very least, someone in this situation should get out at the very next stop and place the call. Or how about text messaging? Of all the moronic and impractical uses of text messaging, here is finally one that makes sense: “On Orange Line at 4th and Adams. Robber onboard. Send police.” The chances of a ###### and grab punk going into full hostage mode is pretty unlikely. Maybe a real useful lesson from this would be for everyone to learn a phone number where they can text the police. New York has such a system in place.
No matter what, a society full of people that take no action whatsoever dooms us all.

I feel dumber

I feel dumber after watching this video. It was super unrealistic for him to steal from the lady and easily get on the bus without no one else noticing? And all that guy had to do is just yell “theif” and the crowd would probably of stopped him.

Then the guy calls 911 and hangs up. You know they will just call you right back a few seconds later. Guess the film maker forgot that part too.

Then standing over the theif (while bus still moing) could only mean an encounter. Thats not a good cliff hanger because no normal person stands infront and faces someone unless they are going to approcach them.

This could have been better (by being somewhat realistic) by say having the theif and lady in some alley way or in some store. Knocks the chick down then gets on the bus. That way the dozens of people on the street that diffently should have saw the mugging wouldn’t have been there.

What took him so long?

I am wondering exactly waht took this man so long to decide if he wanted to be involved or not. The man was a thief and he knew from the time he got on the bus… why wait, why not confront him before the bus leaves the stop? I understand that in the grand scheme he did the right thing, but why the debate? this woman was obviously in need of help…

No Action Is Acceptance - What took him so long?

“A society full of people who take no action dooms us all.”

That is exactly right; Liberty Mutual is exactly wrong.

There is no moral ambiguity in this film, only moral weakness. From the parable of the Good Samaritan through Edmund Burke’s point that doing nothing is all that is needed for evil to flourish to Kitty Genovese’s senseless and infamous death, the lesson is the same: just do it.
