Welcome to The Responsibility Project

Most of us think of ourselves as responsible. We do our work, pay our taxes, and lend a hand to a friend or neighbor when asked.

But when—and how—do you decide to accept responsibility beyond the status quo? To step in and stop a fight. To come forward as a witness. To comfort someone else’s child, when it means you won’t be home to comfort your own.

Responsibility has no playbook. But with The Responsibility Project, we hope to create a place where questions, challenges, victories, failures, and lots of other aspects of doing the right thing—the responsible thing—are shared and discussed in an ongoing dialogue with you.

As a long-time journalist, I’ve seen the issue of responsibility debated and contested all over the world, by the powerful and the powerless…in refugee camps, palaces, courtrooms, prisons, hospitals, churches, and homes…in war and peace. Some ignore it with ease. Others spend a lifetime pondering. Each defines it in his own way.

So join the conversation. Bring along your own experiences and expectations. Test yourself. Debate with others. Get inspired. Give inspiration to others. Let us know what you think.

You might surprise yourself about what responsibility really is, and means, to you.

How Special

This sort of kindness is so rare. Thank you for posting about that lady, and reminding me to take an extra minute from time to time to see how I could help. What can I lose?

A great idea

I never knew this place existed but I am glad I found it. Reminds me of Pay it Forward and Random Acts of Kindness.

Resposibility

I believe we are our brothers keeper. What you would do for yourself, or your family, you should do the same for a stranger. What a better world we would live in, if we treated each other with the same responsibility.

Thank You

I am very pleased to see a national company help others see that ‘Responsibility’ is for everyone. Thank you for strengthening our connection to one another, we need it now more than ever. As times are changing and there is a reoccurring call for everyone to take their place, I will continue to do ‘my work’ with dignity and integrity so other people can see what we are capable of doing together. I would love to work with your company directly to create a community project that will show the country great works that will help us all. Everyday I am committed to doing something for others in the communities in which I am a part of. Today, I am reading and contributing to your cause. Perhaps one day you will contribute to mine. With great faith.

Love thy neighbor

Have you considered the phrase “Love thy neighbor as thyself”? We would never do anything to harm ourselves, would we? It follows, if we follow the directive to love others as we love ourselves, we would never do anything to harm anyone else. We would, instead, take care of others, see to their needs, give them the best we have to offer.

Please remember, our Great Teacher taught us that “neighbor” is a global term; it encompasses every person in the world. If we wish to be to please him, we will accept responsibility for caring for them.
