Earthquake in Haiti: How to Help

Even before Tuesday’s devastating earthquake, Haiti was plagued by brutal numbers: 78 percent of the population living on less than $2 a day, in a country the size of the state of Maryland, with problems as big as the planet.

And then came the latest catastrophic number: 7.0

The International Red Cross has said that as many as three million people may have been killed, injured, or made homeless by the quake.

But on the Richter scale of responsibility, the world’s reaction has also been seismic, with America leading a global relief effort of governments, corporations, and individuals. U.S. cell phone users alone have already donated $8 million to the Red Cross by texting the word “Haiti” to the number 90999. The contributions, in increments of $10 each, form the largest ever charitable response by mobile phone.

“You will not be forsaken, you will not be forgotten,” President Obama told the Haitian people Thursday from the White House. “In this, your hour of greatest need, America stands with you.”

The immediate task for relief workers is monumental, with infrastructure collapsed, and along with it any semblance of government or institutions. The lone American reporter based in Haiti’s capitol before the quake put it this way: “An entire city is screaming for help.”

I want to help!

I am very sad and my heart goes out to all the people of Haiti.
I am not a certified nurse, but I am willing to offer a hand…………., I want to help
in any way possible.
I already contributed with some money, but I really want to be part of something
here, if there is anything I can do to help with a group of support organizing aid
to send to them…..,anything at all.
My prayers are with them!

none...I am just a person who cares...like million

Thank God for people like Steve Braddock…and millions of others, who choose, instead of getting caught up in the stress of their own situations…instead choose to see their personal glass as “half full” in that they have the time to offer to help.

I am here, humbly thankful for a full time job and therefore unable to attend, but I will pray and also contribute.

God bless those who join together to help the human race and recoginize that we are all brothers and sisters. And Godspeed to those who travel to Haiti to assist. I wish I could be there with you, and I am there in spirit…and will help in the ways in which I am able to. God’s blessings upon those who help and even more upon those who are suffering in the wake of the natural disaster.
